Undergraduate Welcome

Dear prospective undergraduate students,

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department (CEE) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers an accredited undergraduate program, leading to a bachelor of science in engineering degree, majoring in civil engineering (BSE).

The undergraduate curriculum course content is developed so that the entering student starts with courses that provide a broad foundation of science, mathematics, beginning engineering topics, and introduction to design. The mid-level undergraduate student gains basic knowledge of the diverse areas of civil engineering and applies basic sciences and engineering design in appropriate engineering courses. The upper level students applies the knowledge gained in lower and mid-level courses to the civil engineering design problems in each areas of emphasis (environmental and water resources, geotechnical, structures, and transportation) as encountered in coursework. Lastly, senior capstone design project courses provide the opportunity for students to undertake design projects in a team setting.

The CEE Department currently has 14 full-time faculty members. They hold PhD degrees from some of the nations most prestigious universities. The faculty are actively involved in the undergraduate program and in advising and mentoring students. In addition, they are involved in directing student activities.

There are many reasons why the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is a great place to earn your degree. Here are just a few:
  • Knowledgeable faculty in five basic civil engineering areas as indicated by the results of exit interviews and surveys with graduating seniors and alumni;
  • Faculty dedicated to teaching as indicated by the results of exit interviews and alumni surveys; and the number of the faculty who have been granted the College of Engineering and regional distinguished teaching awards;
  • Faculty active in research involving both graduate and undergraduate students;
  • Faculty interact with governmental and private sectors through professional activities, collaboration on student and research projects, and consulting;
  • Faculty support student organizations such as ASCE, ACI, AIAA, ITE and SWE;
  • Most faculty are registered engineers in Nevada and other states;
  • Curriculum provides students with foundation in fundamentals of civil engineering enabling them to begin professional engineering registration process by requiring completion of the FE Exam as a requirement for graduation;
  • Curriculum has a two-semester capstone senior design project where students undertake comprehensively design problems.
  • Many technical electives are offered frequently;
  • Curriculum has seven engineering laboratory and field components providing students with hands-on experience;
  • Lecture courses are taught by full-time faculty;
  • Many students are exposed to modern design issues owing to employment in local engineering offices during their junior and senior years; and
  • Mature and focused students.
Additionally, the program benefits from being located in Las Vegas, where demand for civil engineers has been high. The majority of the graduates have found employment locally and the department enjoys good working relationships with local government agencies and consulting firms that hire students. Local consulting firms have supported the department through serving on the external advisory committee, accommodating students who are seeking graduate degrees on a part-time basis while working, and supporting ASCE student chapter activities. The local professional community has also provided civil engineering students with internship opportunities. Undoubtedly, these internships help the students preparation by providing hands-on technical experience while working with civil engineers from a variety of disciplines.
